    • [MOD] Faceless| A multiplayer, co-op mod for the Source Engine!

Hey bros, I figured I'd "pimp" out the mod by development team "Ethereal Entertainment" and myself are currently developing. It's a mod for the Source Engine 2007, and it's based on the Slenderman. If you guys would love some details, I'll post some. I saw that someone had already posted something about my mod here, and I'd just like to verify and prove that it is indeed a real thing. So, without further ado. The details!
      ---
You may be curious as to what 'Faceless' is all about, and to simply put it bluntly, it's gonna be scary. Slender: Source is based off of the legend of the Slenderman which is a mythical creature often depicted as a tall, thin figure wearing a black suit and a blank face.

"According to the legend, he can stretch or shorten his arms at will and has tentacle-like appendages protruding from his back. Depending on the interpretations of the myth, the creature can cause memory loss, insomnia, paranoia, coughing fits (nicknamed “slendersickness”), photograph/video distortions and can teleport at will. The urban legend has inspired fan arts, fictional creepypastas and a mockumentary series in the style of the 1999 indie horror film Blair Witch Project."

Now, our aim with this game/mod is to really frighten players, and give them that experience we will want & crave for when we play a horror game, or even watch a horror film. That feeling of being scared. With Slender: Source, players will be able to play with up to three of their friends and traverse a variety of environments trying to uncover who/what the Slenderman really is, all while collecting strange little dolls that resemble children; which the player can try figuring out the purpose of these dolls. Were they victims of the Slenderman, or are they just normal, creepy, dolls? That decision comes up the player's
imagination. So, yes that's right. We're making a multiplayer version of the Slenderman story, and we've gotten inspiration by the game "Slender" which was a Unity project developed by Parsec Productions in which you must avoid looking at the Slenderman to go insane. It's a wonderful, and terrifying experience which everyone should check out, which you can find right here as well as some gameplay of the said game, to hopefully interest you in what WE plan on doing with the legend, and the creature.

So, how are we trying to make our version different? Simple. Four players will be playing as teenagers who are sent out on a dare to try and find/discover the myth behind the Slenderman. The game will then thrust these players into a variety of environments where they must find15 dolls (which resemble creepy children) and collect them without being killed by the Slenderman. The game has no time limit, and the onlygoals by the players is to survive, and collect these dolls. Once all of the dolls have been collected the game will end. There is no combat, and no way to defend yourself.

The Slenderman will be able to kill you within one hit, so try to avoid him as much as possible. We also are not restricting players to one environment, so upon release of the mod/game players will be able to explore two different kinds of environments when playing the game. The first being the standard woods that you've come to see in the Unity title, as well as an abandoned hospital. So, two maps upon release that should take roughly 30 minutes to an hour to complete, but don't fret! With teamwork, and proper thinking you should be able to complete the maps/levels without dying. We have a ton of levels planned for this game, but we'll only be shipping with two maps to start out, and hopefully finish off with around 8, but also allow the players/community to design their own levels.

I like the name of the devteam, would you consider making other paranormal/creepy mods after this one is completed?

Awesome question, and yes we plan to be a dev-team known for creating horror based video games. After Slender: Source is completed we plan to finally develop, and release our very first commercial title.

I personally hope you will consider paranormal mods with a sniff of satanism in it. Currently paranormal like mods are really a bit of a taboo. I was busy on some maps awhile ago , but sadly SourceSDK corrupted them all for no reason (also the autosaves) , so I basically dropped on mapping since then. Also I have architectual problems , I do not simply make a building/landscape without something drawn. Which also played a factor.

I might consider mapping such thing though , since I will just simply ripoff a building from an other game or something to compensate that.

    • The amount of positive feedback is making me oh so happy. Please be aware development has just begun, however we plan on having closed beta testing in the coming months once the first map is done. No applications for testers are being taken yet, however feel free to ask questions and the such.

Wow I am going to keep my eye on this because this looks amazing! I've been waiting for a team to do a source mod based off of Slenderman for a while now :D

Well, you don't need to wait any longer! We have a planned total of 8 maps slated for when we go full release, but with two maps being shipped out when we release the beta. This number may be subject to change dependent on work schedules, but no fears. You'll get at-least two maps when the beta hits, and hopefully a new map each month. We may even go higher than the planned 8 but that's all up to how well the mod is received by the people once it's released.

This looks awesome! when will this be ready? and when will the public be able to download it?

We don't have any ideas when the mod will be ready since development is still in the early stages. We have a Slenderman model being made, and the maps are currently being made as well. I'm doing my best at programming, and making sure there isn't any buggy lines of code. My current task right now is writing the code that will allow the Slenderman to "teleport" all across the map, even inside buildings. This is so there's a chance when a player opens a door the Slenderman could be standing right there in-front of them.

We'll keep you up to date on all the details; including the release, etc.

We've been getting a ton of media coverage already and we've been posted in a few internet blogs/articles. Getting kinda nervous over here about all the hype for this already, seeing as we just announced it like three days ago.

    • What type of physics do you plan on having for when the player is close to Slenderman? One major problem I had when playing Slender is the way Slenderman "reacted". The standing off in the distance was good, but the problem with their model and such is it's very static, so those face to face interactions were kinda dull except for the few times there was that jump scare.

Nice question. Our character artist is currently creating the model for the Slenderman, and once he kills someone he will grow some more appendages; similar to other media references about the creature. We're thinking about having it so when the Slenderman is close either creepy music plays or the character will start breathing very odd.

Our model for the Slenderman is hopefully going to scare the pants off of everyone as he won't be stationary. You'll see him move about; but if you do, you better get ready to run.

What are you planning to do after you finish this game?
We don't really know yet. We'd like to make another survival-horror game but actually sell it. However, we're just thinking about Slender: Source for the mean-time.
