    • As a kid i wanted to be a cop or a soldier.
Then I found out that in order to be a cop [here in italy,at least],you first have to join the military, spend 4 years training and then quit it [meaning: no future career in the military] and hope the police needs agents.
If they don't,you realize you wasted 4 years of your life.

As a teen I changed my mind about a lot of things.
I started playing piano and after a while I began fucking around with DAWs [digial audio workstationS].
The thought of being a "serious" music producer never crossed my mind though I kept making music for fun. Until my arm got fucked, that is.
So I had to stop and now...Well shit,I have no idea.
    • When I was a kid I desparately wanted to be an author, and for Pokémon to be real. Then like 3 years later, I wanted to be an artist, and for Pokémon to be real. Then about another 3 years later, I wanted to be a graphic designer, and for Pokémon to be real. And now, I want to be a pilot, and I've already started with that dream, and I'm only 13, I'm proud of that.

Oh, and I still wish for Pokémon to be real. C'x

    • As a child, I always wanted to be a doctor.

For a few years I wanted to be an actress. But my parents never encouraged it- they didn't let me go to drama clubs or anything. The annual school musical was the most I could do- and since I wasn't the most confident singer, I always got stuck in the ensemble cast.
But I loved movies, and man, I decided that I'm gonna be involved in them no matter what. So I spent most of my high school years dreaming of becoming an animator or special effects artist. I practiced messing around with chroma key, edited family videos, and even filmed a distant relative's wedding when I was 14 years old.
I couldn't persuade my parents to buy me the software- so I had 30 days to learn it, use it, and finish what I was doing.

Unfortunately for me, I was skilled in sciences when I was in high school. So my parents pretty much told me: "Become a doctor, earn money, buy the software, and do it as a hobby."

      Yeah right.

I got talked out of doing graphics and got pushed down the science route for college- I didn't mind, I enjoyed biology- I found it interesting. But it was the same way I'd find anything else interesting. I scraped a pass, and I'm now in university studying human biology.

I still don't want to be a doctor- that's what my parents want. I am considering going into research (I can draw cells!! :) )

But I just don't know anymore.
      I don't do much, but I occasionally tumbl .

I'm sorry, but seriously. Tell your parents to GTFO and chase your dreams. That's fucked up to let someone down, just because you want him to be what you've never achieved.
    • Oh forgot to add that my parents wanted me to become a CEO but they knew how unlucky we were so I was allowed to do what I want. Then I grew up and the events in the previous post happened. DAMN YOU AGING BODY!!!

Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, if he gets angry, he's a mile away and barefoot.

See, that's my problem, that's my past and I can't change that. I'm kinda in limbo now, I want to continue playing with videos and creating things. But I'm so out of practice- I pretty much gave up all the drawing and editing during college as scraping that pass with chemistry was exhausting.
So I don't feel confident starting it up again, I want to, but I'm...terrified of doing so.

And I can see where my mum is coming from- I'm Indian and family is a big deal for us. I have to give the family a good name- I can't just go off and do an "ordinary" job. There's a stupid amount of pressure. Especially since I'm one of the eldest in my (extended) family.
If it wasn't for my huge family, I'd bet you anything that my parents would have let me do whatever I wanted.

My mum is a nurse practitioner. It's a sorta "I'm successful in healthcare, you're my daughter, you're like me" mentality. And I don't struggle with biology, I don't flinch at the sight of blood, I've worked with terminally ill people before- so it's a perfect career choice in her eyes.

      ....

      Gah!! Family! :S

I understand where you're coming from - it's a normal issue, not only culture-related. In our family taking care of each other is like a hidden rule; no matter what happens, we're there for each other. Literally. But that does bring me pressure, as I don't want to bring those people down - they fully trust me after all. So I understand you can't go all "IT'S MY LIFE GTFO", you have your own reasons.

I'm sure your parents have thought of your well-being mostly, still. It's a fact it's hard to survive when it comes to artistic careers, with making a living and taking negative feedback, etc. I'm NOT saying you can't do it, it's just a way of life where you have to be able to bear drawbacks. With biology, everything will probably be more balanced career-wise. Plus, you're interested in it, at least at some level! Not everyone can say that, me, for example. I took a path where I can make a decent living, yet I can't say I enjoy it. Still, I haven't found anything I'd be interested in, so I still can't think of a better choice.

But! You must not let it get to you that you're "out of practice"! I used to think like that too when I'd given up on drawing for a longer while, but after time passed, I found myself just yearning to create again - a real strike of inspiration. It might not look good at first, of course not. It takes time to find your own style, and the flow of working - no matter what art-form we're talking about. But once you get it, it'll feel exactly right. You don't have to do it for your job, you can do it for yourself, you know. For the joy of simply creating something. I know my words must not differ much from the ones from your parents, but I guess I'm just trying to say that it all depends on the point of view you take. You CAN do anything you like, it just doesn't always go exactly like you planned - life rarely does.

Just find the right combination to think rationally, but also listen to your heart. I hope... no. I believe everything will work out for you in the end, okay?

That's one of the nicest things anyone's ever said to me. Thank you.

So far, I've decided to just make the most of uni; I may be doing a biology degree, but so far this semester, I've read random books about political theories, culture, sociology and attempted java programming.
I get interested in a hundred different things at once.

I've never actually told anyone these things in such detail; so just typing out these posts have gotten me thinking...I guess that's why my parents didn't want me considering an artistic career. I'm incredibly fickle minded at times- and if I decided to change careers or something, I'd have been stuck.

Biology probably gives me more choice.
And hey, someone's got to make those DNA animations for high-schoolers.

My mum still wants me to be a Doctor, but I have a couple of years to decide if that really is for me. And a couple of years to try and explain to my parents why it may not be.

For now, I guess I'll just carry on with my degree and save-up for a new graphics tablet.

      Baby-steps forward.

    • Let no'one decide the fate of you and your dreams. You are your own person, and you can do whatever you want. Anyone can. To not live a life as you wish it is not living a life at all. And if there's a way I can help anyone achieve their goals, dreams, or help them obtain a higher hope, I will do so.
