Intro to Programming

Hey bros!

I'm gonna be taking an intro to programming class this quarter at school. I know nothing about programming so I was wondering if any skilled people on the forums would be able to help me out when I need it. I heard the class is really hard, but I bet it's nothing you guys can't handle!

People are always asking for help on Amnesia custom stories, I thought I'd come to you guys for general programming help!

Depends on what programming language you are taking. C++? C#? Flash?

Basics of Programming
-Variables(and types)
-Functions
-Arrays
-Strings
-Loops(methods of loops also)
-If Then conditionals
-Expressions

Well, thats from PAWN anyways, but thats pretty much the basics to doing any sort of programming. (PAWN is written in C)

Also, hope that the class does NOT start with Alice...
..that freeware piece of...*ahem*

I don't know how much you're into computers, but I would recommend experimenting with Flash. Tons of independent developers (or even 14 year olds with Flash 6) use it, so it's a great way to introduce yourself to basic programming and computer skills.

I don't know any languages other than Flash ActionScript, but people say that Flash is a very casual/easy language, so I would consider it a good introduction. It's also very useful for media online, and probably the best way to make simple browser games.

If you want to do more serious stuff, I would recommend C++ or C# (great for creating programs and games), HTML, and then either PHP or Javascript to help run your site (I've heard both are useful).

I'm mainly self-taught in Flash, but much of what I learned was from tutorials and helpful people on Newgrounds. You don't have to take the same path I did, but if you're looking for options, that's one of them.

I don't know if I'll actually be working on something, I'm just taking the class! Also, I heard we'll be using something called Python.

Python is actually a pretty nice language to start with, as it's not so "easy" that it takes away the fundamentals, but not so hard that you can't understand what's happening. If you want to look at Python beforehand, check out python.org/.

I can probably be of some help with Python, as I've used it over the years and recently got back into it a bit.

Great to hear people have heard of it! Later in the course we'll have projects to work on which will be in the form of making certain programs and if I ever get stuck or need help, I'd like to have people here who could help me out. The work I'll be doing will probably be child's play for some of you

Ok, a side note to what I posted (and deleted), I'm working on this assignment at my school's computer lab and I noticed this girl directly in front of me had found this page through google searching what I had posted cuz she needed help with my same problem. My post and account all came up and was just sitting there on the screen. I figured out my problem so I deleted my previous post, but I thought that was just hilarious! I was so tempted to tell her to turn around, just her seeing my profile picture would have probably been enough to recognize me! hahaha xD

python is a beautiful language. piece of piss to use. so much easier than java or c++ and such. basically good logic english
