  • Why are my videos taking so long to upload to Youtube? Can someone help? Thanks. :)

Okay, I know what you are thinking: "He's probably and 8 year old with a dinosaur for a computer who doesn't know anything technical."

Not true. I am 14, have a fully upgraded and updated custom built computer, and my videos are Let's Plays between 8 to 20 minutes. Now, if I'm uploading a video between 8 to 12 minutes, it will take about 2 hours. Anything between like 15 and 20 take about like 450 minutes. And it kinda ticks me off since my friend can upload a 14 minutes long video in 15 minutes, and his computer isn't shitty, but not the best. And yes, I thought of the possibilities, like background programs running and internet connection, but none of that seems to be the problem. Can someone help? And soon? Thanks.

Oh, and most are .WMV, but some are AVI. But they usually don't have a time difference. Thanks. :)
  • It depends on the codec the video file is using.
I render my files in Sony Vegas with Sony AVC, (h.264 codec: the one YouTube uses) and it only takes about 15 minutes to upload a 10 minute video.
If you don't have the video encoding to h.264, then YouTube has to convert it to something else, and that's why it's taking so long.

Edit: I'm not entirely sure about this, but I believe .wmv files have their own Windows codec.
I would either find a video editing program that does that, or use VirtualDub to convert the file.
    VirtualDub Download: virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

If you use VirtualDub, here's a tutorial on how to get the h.264 codec.

Why thank you, kind sir. I already have VirtualDub and Sony Vegas Pro, so I shall test out your theory. Again, thank you.
  • It does have to do with upload speed ALSO.
But, I'm saying that youtube uploads h.264 codec the fastest because it's the codec YouTube uses.
If you upload .wmv files, YouTube has to convert them to h.264, so it typically doubles the upload time.

The preset should be called SONY AVC. Then when you click that, you can click Custom off to the side to make sure the settings are as you want them.
    Here's my settings, for example:

After you finish, it should be rendering to .mp4 file.
