I'm not familiar with this type of forum board but, is there any way you could implement a 'New posts' button somewhere where it could be easily accessible/navigable from any page on the website.
My forums are VBull and they come standard with it, I noticed there is a type of 'Unread posts' directory here but it's only accessible via the front page + is split into categories which is a little awkward if you're just browsing for new posts in general (Unread posts could be classified as a dead thread in a particularly inactive section, meaning I could post accidentally and be punished for gravedigging).
An example of the 'New posts' nav button would be; When I click the button, it brings me to a list of threads posted in order of the most recent post (Most recent == top of the list) and is done via cookie history, if I log on and click new posts I see all the new posts since my last visit/12 hours prior to clicking it again. If I'm logged in as a guest, it shows me all the new posts from the past 24 hours.
This is only a small change to the current structure but I feel it would increase the ergonomics here 10 fold. Thank you for reading my suggestion!
