Yume Nikki (by Kikiyama) and .flow (by lolrust) are 8-bit games that are pretty much about luculent (or maybe not) dreaming that lead to suspicious acts of the main character. All you really have to do is collect 24 effects to complete the game, but the characters you find within it are very amusing!

Although they aren't entirely scary (they only have one enemy that is rarely around), I thought that even though the story is wordless, it's still a pretty interesting storyline! May it make more sense to play the original game (Yume Nikki) first, I would prefer to play .flow for more of a horror-like story line!
