FRAPS/Camtasia Questions

Hey bros,

I've been having a bit of trouble recording recently. I tried recording Half Life 2 with the 30 FPS settings in Fraps and it worked well, but had some jittering and lag at times. Then I tried the 60 fps setting and the game ran fairly smoothly, but when I put the footage into camtasia, it was really hard to edit because it was jumping frames like crazy, but it was fine once I rendered out the video.

It just really made it a pain for editing. Is there any ideas why this is happening? Thanks!

Try to have preview in smaller quality in the editing software. When I do my editing in vegas, if the preview quality is ramped up to maximum, it isnt able to show me crossfading or stuff like that, it just jumps over it. However after setting the preview to "lesser" quality, it works just fine.

As for the ingame thing, that's normal and it wont show up in the footage.

Or try to convert it into a different AVI format. Frapses format is non compressed and any video editing program will have a hard time with it unless you got a badass pc.

try to convert it to VMW file on 8 mega pixel, i think it would work

If he converts it he will lose some of the quality. If possible he should just reduce the preview Quality/size in the editing software.
However if no options are available converting or rendering will do the job. Keep in mind everytime you convert/render/compress you lose some data.

Fraps generates video files in AVI format which have very little compression and take up a large amount of disk space, but Fraps itself can’t convert videos.
In my experience, you may try to convert the videos to MP4, it will minimize the loss of quality.
This should do the job: how to convert avi to mp4 on Mac and Windows
I have been using the program to convert files for years, works great.
If you're not sure what settings to use you can always load a video that plays Ok and check the properties.

I suggest using Dxtory, it uses a codec that's really easy to edit with. Also, it's quite neat with compression, not too large files.

To tell you the truth I have had so many issues with FRAPS. It was always messing up the audio on my skype calls or even on some videos. And when I tried to get my money back they took 3 months to get a hold of me. If I where you I would look up bandicam. I use it now and love it! its the same price as fraps and works with a lot more games. Here is a link to its page bandicam.com/

Why don't you use the Camtasia screen recorder?
