Hello, I made this topic to just show some of the basic HTML websites I've made.
I'd love some tips and such for improvements. So if you know your stuff, please give me any pointers.
I would like to be able to make a bit of money on the side from freelance stuff like this. My site isn't completely finished. Some pages just have dummy text and such but yah.
Any constructive criticism would be welcome.

My website is SRCOsborneDesigns From there, there were 2 tabs to see a couple other site's I've done but only one is still viewable for some reason.
The one is for Osborne Associates (link is to current, mine is through my site) . My dad's company.
Compared to what it currently is, it's a vast improvement. But it's still quite terrible XD so again, feel free to suggest any ways to improve it.

Thanks in advance I guess, and in the off chance you want to hire my services, then holy crap. Let's talk! XD
I baked you a cookie. But then I thought, "Better not". So I ate it. You're welcome!

    • I'll be honest with you, Simon: you still have things to improve and you know that, don't you?
Well, i think you should keep studying it.. Look up for other commands, so you can complete it some more. Don't you agree? :)
    • I'm gonna post here EXACTLY what my first thoughts were when viewing your websites, as I don't know you and so was a "customer" who has viewed it for the first time.

SRCOsbourneDesigns : Ouch. That purple colour messed with my eyes a little, and dominated the screen, especially the logo. Perhaps toning the logo down to not quite such a colour might be best?

Osbourne Associates : As someone who knew nothing about the website, I couldn't be bothered to read that much text and the website seemed un-complete (I know it's still in progress :P). Perhaps having a big catchphrase to catch your audiences attention on that homepage might be effective here, with the text on another page or under it.

It seemed unfair for me to judge you on things that I can't do myself though, so congratulations on building them! My coding skills are hopeless, so you're already better than me ;)
A smile a day, keeps sadness away!

Come and have a good ol' cuppa with me... You know you want to ...
    • I agree with Turkey. Your site still seems incomplete. But i know it is still in progress, so yeah.. :p
You can still improve it some more, dude. Just saying.
One hint: why don't you try looking up for CSS and PHP too? It might come in very handy.
Anyway, all the best to affort. :)
    • Hey I've been doing web design for a while and I'm not the best but I think you have a lot of work to do. I looked at the source code and everything is fine there, so you're pretty set technically speaking. It's the design part that is suffering. And that's the thing about web design - you can be great at the programming but the user doesn't see that part. Here are some of my suggestions.

      1. Look at popular websites and how they are laid out in terms of design. Try to mimic/copy a couple of them to get a hang of design.

      2. Browse some design websites. I'll post a couple at the end.

      3. Font-combinations. Google has a great amount of google fonts that you can include with CSS.

      4. Colors, colors, colors. Find a group of four or five colors that go together and use those throughout for a nice concise and cohesive website.

      patterntap.com/- example website designs
      webcreme.com/ - more example websites
subtlepatterns.com/ - patterns that you can use in places like the body to add depth/texture to a web page
colourlovers.com/ - great source of color palettes of colors that go well together
Google Fonts - Font combinations to further spice up your site

The last thing I would suggest is make a mock up design in photoshop or something of how you want the site to look first and then make it. Don't dive in and expect it to come out right without first planning it. Good luck!
    • PHP is the next step for me really once I have a decent grasp of what I'm doing. I am not particularly looking forward to it but meh. It'd be nice to know, plus I can actually contribute to sites/forums I'm with (if they let me anyway)

Thanks all for the tips so far anyhoo, I am looking into them all.

In the way of the colours, I use this Adobe Kuler thing to get a rough idea for colour schemes to use. It came up with 2 greens, 2 purples and a gold, which I'm using for the most part. Greens are links, gold I've only used on the twitter feed text and the purple is everywhere as you can see XD.

      @Firebelley
I know what you mean about the design. I've never been too good at it. I've generally been quite good at anything technically related. I guess when it came to me in my family, all the creativity got worn out. XD
I shall have a look at those sites you linked when I have time. Been busy today.
With the font I was originally trying Diavlo, but google never had it so only I could see it. It's a nice font though, it's actually the font in that orb at the top. But my friend has also said to look through google's fonts for something to use.

      @NuMetalWolf
As I said above, PHP is the next step, I don't particularly have the time to learn it on top of every other commitment I have as well as needing time to just melt into my chair, and naturally I am using CSS so no issues there =P

Yeah I've had that opinion about the purple a few times but not from the two of my friends who are pretty html/php savvy, not sure why. Think I may try a different colour scheme all together however. Originally I had it Blue and such.
I think it may be worth making the orb smaller, still having the text the same size really... and as I said, different colour.
Just can't be too dark, but if that purple is "bright" then I'm screwed! XD

Again thanks for all the feedback.
I shall take it all into further consideration and work out what the heck to do next! ^^
I baked you a cookie. But then I thought, "Better not". So I ate it. You're welcome!

    • I am such a lazyass , I have used sitegrinder with photoshop to make a working mockup website (Its still a mockup , because the code is messy) and then I proceed with recoding thr actual stuff , which I am too lazy for and currently not possible to do so. You have really much to learn as your websites are like the uber ground foundation of html.
