      Hello guys!
I just wanted to make you guys aware of what I and seven friends have been doing for the last couple of months. We've been working on a game with the title "Stairs" and we're going to compete with the title in the "Swedish Game Awards" (SGA from now on).

      Why are we doing this?
The idea was to create a "flashback" to old-school horror games, as we believe that most horror games of today have become a hybrid of action and shooters. So we wanted to "go back", so to speak, and what we created was Stairs.

      What is Stairs?
"Dwell deep into the unknown and into the mind of the weak and the wounded. Learn to obey your deepest fears, interact with other peoples worst nightmares and survive the twisted images created by the dark side of our psyche."

The game has been in development for about ten weeks and it's running in the UDK engine. Right now, we have a "proof of concept" of the game and as soon as we're done at SGA we're most likely going to make it available to the public, for free. What happens from there? We're not sure yet, but we hope to be able to keep on developing the game and see what it leads up to. But we're still students, so this is more or less an experiment from our side, and a very exciting at that!

Got any questions? Feel free to ask away!

    • Well, for what i've seen on the trailer, it really reminds me of scp-087, to be honest.
If you don't mind me suggesting, why don't you put some notes in the game? Have you ever thought about making a solid story for it? It might be very interesting, just saying.
    • To be honest it looks very blocky and empty, be sure to fill it up with stuff like airducts and such to make it look less empty and therefore less boring. The only thing I give you credit for is for using the Unreal Engine instead of Unity as Unity horror games piss me off lately as most are made with major prefabs and such and published as their own work (and being terrible).

Thank you for your creative critique! :) the reason why it looks so blocky and empty, is because of the story behind the game in the first place. In the teaser trailer, he mentions an abandoned factory, but just like SCP-087 the staircase is the games focus. The protagonist goes to investigate and finds down the staircase a bombshelter. That's the part you see in the trailer.

Well, without spoiling too much of it, you are more than welcome to check out our facebook page for at least some more screenshots taken from the game. The teaser is after all just a teaser and wont tell you much. Anywho, thanks for this great comment! This is what makes us developers want to work even harder!

There will be plenty of notes for people to interact with to get a more solid understanding of the story itself ;P But this is just a teaser trailer for a pre-alpha that we are gonna let people test ( for free of course ). We got a story already, but it is just like you're saying. The trailer is not showing much of it! It is suppose to bring some mystery to it, make the viewer think for themselves a little bit.

      Thanks for your criticism! :)

I'd love it, thanks a lot. And you're welcome. :)

Trailer looks goooooood! Ile give this a try when the demos out :D

We are right at this moment trying to make the .exe to work properly. Just hold on to your hat! We'll let you know when the demo is out! ^^

I am wondering if you make use of the enviroment you create within the game as you can easily build up the suspense by adding random events which are actually nothing.

      For example :

      - Falling objects out of a cabinet
      - Placing small metal objects on the ground (cans) which the player kicks and make a loud noise
      - Random steam out of pipes
      - Lights which pop
      - Random ambient noises etc.

Suggesting this due to the fact the current generation of (horror) indie games quite suck to be honest by being too straight forward and only relying on 'in your face' scares whilst the ambience can keep the tension longer than a cheaply created scare.

I think you bring up really good examples of how to make a great atmosphere. And I hope it will cheer you up when I say that we've on the exact same wavelength! Using the environment to do simple (and sometimes questionable) acts against the player is something that we're using in the game. We're trying to create an atmosphere which will lift the players creativity, to create a monster that doesn't exist. No weapons is another example that we're going for to make the player defenseless.

I just hope that this pre-alpha demo will be enough for people to notice it. We want to create new mechanics ( of which doesn't exist in the game yet due to lack of time ) to bring a new experience for people who loves solving puzzles in a tough atmosphere. Again, I thank you for the feedback! I think you'll be pleased. :)
    • I just played the Pre-Alpha Demo of this & I got to say its really well done, The Ambience is just right, they aren't constantly throwing jump scares in your face, they let the story slowly Unnerve you.

Really well done guys :) Will the Final game involve the staircase having multiple levels to the factory & this Alpha was just one Level? ...Reguardless

...I look forward to playing the finished product :D

I Did a Let's Play of this game which you can check out if you've got a spare 20 minutes (just check my YouTube)
