  • Youtube Video Length Discussion

Hey guys. Just curious on a couple of things and I thought I'd get some feedback from my fellow gamers.
When you record and upload your content onto YouTube, do you like to have longer video segments or shorter? I personally prefer longer videos(30 minutes is where I usually stop) that way I can get as much as i can in a video, it's a good thing for longer games I suppose. However, I'm burning through RPG Maker games in 2 videos or so. Thoughts on this?
    Thanks everyone. :)

  • Personally, I believe in quality over quantity (Not saying your videos are bad, I haven't actually seen them, they may be rather good.), for I'd rather have 1 really short clip that's of a high standard, than a really long clip that's a bit sketched together, however I do believe that several members of the ThatHDChannel team would not agree with me there. It's more about personal preference really, I mean if you feel that you can maintain a high standard over a long period of time, great I'd stick to that, however if you do feel that you're getting a bit bored towards the end and that you may bore your audience, I'd stick to smaller videos.
  • 10-15 minutes is the best time for every part imo. Maybe even closer to 10 as when you are going towards the 15 minutes it begins to get dull and such. Has nothing to do with the content (well , maybe.) , but it just feels too heavy. And if you are doing 15+ minute videos then I advise you to use anotations properly to let your viewers skip the 'boring' parts and go straight into the action (if your vids have any).

Ps. your text is insanely hard to read due to its color. Avoid doing so next time.

  • Normaly 15 minutes is good enough for me . My videos are long from 14 to 16 minutes . Sometimes when i enjoy playing too much and i forget about time i end up with 20+ minutes (but i am trying to control this and reduce that to minimum) . But yeah like Shikieiki Yamaxanadu (OMG this name killing me :D ) said , more like 15 minutes starting to be dull and lil bit boring :)
  • I used to make 15 minute videos and do no editing and upload straight away etc.

What i prefer doing now is to make lps record like half an hour and make it into a 12 minute clip or something but if there is a part where i search for 5 minutes i get rid of all that 5 minutes

Certain games I do similar to how Seananners does it (record for about an hour and make it into a short 3-4 minute clip)

But for LP's i try and get rid of the boring bits effectively :)

  • Never more than 15 minutes. 10 minutres lenght of video takes me about three hours of rendering & extracting.. And then I use 1-2 hours on uploading (Yeah, both my internet and computer pretty much sucks).

I like watching the shorter videos. When watching longer vids, I tend to lose attention. If they are really exciting/funny however, I can watch hours of footage!

I still like the shorter videos better. As long as they're good, of course.

Well shit. All my videos are around 30 mins give or take. Do you think that's why I don't have as many viewers?

Well , it would be utterly annoying for me to watch such long videos actually. but I don't think it doesn't make that much impact due to the size of your channel.

And yes it might be indirectly as if you would shorten your videos , you would have more videos. More videos = more pathways for people to discover your content etc. .

I suppose you're right. I just don't have all the time in the day to record videos (job/school/etc) so when I do get the time, I record about 30 minutes of footage. I usually try to play 3 games at a time and I guess I like to keep it fresh and beat games sorta fast so I can enjoy the next one.
That's still good, as then you can shorten/ split the video in two, if you wanted to. I have to do that a lot; record one night for about an hour, then use that for four 15 minute videos. I also agree, with the fact that doing a lp of a long game can get boring.. Especially when it's a difficult game!

Come and have a good ol' cuppa with me... You know you want to ...

Well the thing with that, with recording an hour and then splitting it into 4 15 minute videos, it would just jump into the next video, I like giving intros and outros to all my vids.
When you're nearing 15 minutes, start looking for a good time to end the video. Pause it, record an outro, then an intro, and then just continue playing as normal.
You can always separate the clips when you're editing your videos.
    I don't do much, but I occasionally tumbl .

One good thing after having uploaded so many long videos is you can pick
the parts you like and do some montage videos once in a while
That's a really good idea- do some montages with your longer videos when you get time.

When I recommend Youtubers to my friends, I usually show them montages first.
It showcases your work in as little time as possible- few people want to waste time on something they're not sure they'll like.
It may also encourage them to view the longer full length videos, leaving you more flexible on the length of your videos later on.
