Ok, so I will just be a random dude passing by an advice based on his own experience.
So back when the PS3 came out, and there weren't a lot of games around I stumbled onto Folklore released in 2007 (or FolksSoul in Japan). It was a basically a really weird game in the beginning for me but in hindsight it was also really fun. The game rides mostly on the story (the gameplay might even be a bit repetitive).
I don't know why there are two spoilers instead of one, the second one is the one that shows what's written there.

The gameplay basically exists out of two things, walking around at daytime learning more about the story by talking with the villlagers, and at night fighting against monsters.

The story is really good, because everytime you think you figure something out usually it's something different. And it can be surprising as well. What's also really nice about it is that you can (and I think should!) play the two stories (Keats' and Ellen's story are slightly different because they both get different information) parallel. So when you complete a chapter (you get a save point at the end of each chapter and then re-pick you're character) with either one, I think you should play the story with the other character as well because though you have to play the same theme (yes every level has a theme!) in the level where you have to fight against monsters you also get to know slightly different things about the story. The story is told in three different ways comic book style, cutscene or the old RPG sandbox-like (go search for the right person to talk to :P).

Ellen receives a letter from her mother who left her when she was a child stating that she wants to meet her in the village of Doolin in Ireland. Around the same time Keats, a publisher of an occult magazine, gets a phone call from a woman in panic, saying he needs to come to the village of Doolin. And as the story progresses you slowly realize the village has some dark secrets. Now when you play the game you can play as either character but the story is still the same, you just view it from a different angle. The gameplay part is mostly in alternate dimensions (where the dead reside). The first time you arrive it's actually a holiday sort of like Halloween but the boundary between world of the Living and the world of the Dead(Netherworld) fades and the living can meet the dead. Everytime you complete a dimension/level you learn more about the secrets of the village.

Now the latter is interesting and repetitive at the same time. When you beat a monster it goes unconsious and it's soul comes out. You can capture it and use it in battle for your own. Every monster has his own unique ability/attack. You capture them by using the SIXAXIS from the PS3 controller through a little minigame. This is more or less the repetitive part, of these minigames exist only four types (shaking, swinging(difficult to explain), pulling and a mix of all(switching between them every 2 seconds or so)). The other repetitive part is the fact that in order to upgrade your monsters, to make your attacks stronger, you have to collect items or other monster. I found it more or less repetitive, but then again it is not required if you wish to complete the game. You can do everything without the upgrades. I just like to 100% most of my games and collect those upgrades but they are not necessary and don't do anything spectacular to the game such as alternate endings.

At a certain point the game won't allow you to progress with just one character because that would kind of ruin the climax =)
