Thoughts on Mad Father and Misao
Apart from the obvious connections, (Ogre/Onigawara, Novella mentioning her father being a scientist [she’s Aya’s Clone,] Doctor Drevis’s cameo,)
Oni translates literally to ogre or demon. Onigawara, Ogre’s alias, is a type of roof tile, similar to a gargoyle, which scares away evil. Oni themselves were originally evil spirits, but evolved as protective spirits, though they keep some of their original wickedness.
When I first played through Mad Father, it occurred to me that Aya has an odd hair color for having parents with light brown hair. Though she has her father’s personality and her mother’s eyes, a phrase seemed to jump out at me when I was doing research..
Oya ni ninu ko wa oni no ko, or “A child who does not resemble his parents is the child of an oni.” It’s usually used to describe a child who does not look like or does not act like their parents. It may be completely irrelevant, but it struck me as a little eerie.
The power to curse, though, seems more like the concept of a western demon. More interestingly, Ogre gives the power, but takes it away by using someone to lift the curse. He seems to enjoy toying with mankind in an almost Lokean way, but keeps the mortals he finds most interesting for his own personal use later (I’m looking at you, Drevis.) Due to his power over curses after death, he seems to be less of an oni and more of a shinigami.
Now, this brings a question as to his ‘company.’ Shinigami are described as a group, rather than a single entity. (Think Death Note for this one.) It’s very possible (read: almost definite, here) he is but one of many of his kind, and, as he has such power, is a higher-up.
In short, Ogre is a death-spirit with the power of vengeance. Personality-wise, he’s pretty much Clavicus Vile (casual Elder Scrolls Reference) but more mysterious and less of a sarcastic asshole. You guys need to focus on him more because he’s a great character.
