You should probably post the exact error, and tell what kind of avi it is your are trying to import, did you make it with a recorder or?██████████████████████████████████████

Well, if it's not working (but it should, cause that's the source of the problem, dvix is needed) just convert it to another format.
You can use basic stuff like youtube downloader for this or any other converter. Just be sure to convert it to something, that sony vegas can handle.

Never render to AVI.
Sony AVC (mp4) is the type i always render too and never had any problems with codecs and such. -
First up, there are many different codecs that can be used with the avi container. Download this program, its called GSpot:

It will tell you what codec it is (top right hand corner).
Once we know that, it will make it much easier than just guessing codecs -
i am not importing in avi you shoul import in .wmv format

If you're importing .avi as raw files and having problems, just reinstall it and it would work. Uninstall klite codecs too.

just use files which are compatible with the programme

just convert it to mp3 or mp4, i'd use mp4 cause it's not as heavy as mp3 which spares you time rendering at the end

I Usually render my Videos as WMV (Windows Movie) Format.
I personally find that it gives out a better quality.
