I thought it would be nice to have such thread because not everyone has money to buy the expensive programs and not everyone wants to use "cracked" versions.

So yeah, I use GIMP for graphics (sometimes with Photoscape for frames). For making gifs I use KMPlayer (for caps) and Photoscape.

Currently, I'm looking for something similar to Sony Vegas. New Movie Maker disappointed me, so it's out of question. Also, something for recording sound would be nice too (I had Audacity but it caused weird stuff on my computer, so I want to check out something else before trying it again).

Trials are acceptable too but please say if there is time limit and what functions are/aren't there. And if you want to ask about some program too, I can add your question to this post.

    • I use Replay Video capture for not only video capturing, but capturing audio too. Its free, but can only record 2 minutes per open and close of the window, so it will be king of a pain in the backside, but apart from that, excellent audio capture. I know Movie maker is a dissapointing spawn from a very lazy Microsoft worker, but custom plugin can be used to enhance it for multiple layers, audio adjust, etc....

I see, I may check it out.
      What plugin do you mean?

    • I use Camtasia studio for both my recording and editing now. I used to use fraps, and edit with movie maker, but I think Camtasia studio IS better than movie maker, if still being very basic. Camtasia studio is for me, very easy to pick up, and does what I personally need it to do, once I got used to it.

That sounded a bit cardboardy and like I was trying to sell something, didn't it? Im not though, it is free for 30 days, so perhaps as a short-term solution it might be good.
A smile a day, keeps sadness away!

Come and have a good ol' cuppa with me... You know you want to ...

I'm not certain, but just some add ons to WMM in general. If your asking for programs like Sony Vegas for free your asking for a pretty tight deal. I'm lucky my uncle got me Sony vegas for free since he works for Sony.
Yeah, I know, that's why I asked here 'cause many bros seem to have something to do with editing, so maybe someone knows a solution. Unfortunately, I can't get Sony Vegas yet and I want to start making some AMVs for example.

I'll think about Camtasia but as you said, it's a short-term solution :/

      • Libre office can do pretty much anything MSOffice can do. If you are used to MS office there is not much of a learning curve, although the learning IS on a different curve / angle.
      • Blender has a pretty good video editor.
      • Gimp, Inkscape, graphics
      • Scribus as a desktop publishing / layout program. (It is not a word processor!!!)
      • Filezilla, SSh
      • Audacity is a decent audio editing program.
The good thing about these is they are cross-platform. That's important to me since I work on ubuntu and ms (of various breeds) machines.

OpenOffice works too, I'm not sure what's the difference between those 2.
