To this very day I do not understand why people play this game. I've looked at videos and it looks like bullets hell. But the patterns are beautiful! :D

yes the main games are bullethell with some fighting spinoffs , but there are tons of fangames covering almost every genre and such. the games arent the only thing which is enjoyable as there are tons of music covers and videos and fanart etc.

    • Today I played Audiosurf with Touhou Rules. If you're interested in how that works and what the fuck I mean by saying "Touhou rules", read along. If not, read anyway because you might get interested while reading.
But be aware that the rules change with the games, meaning that the rules playing the OST of Imperishable Night may differ from playing the OST of Hisoutensoku. How that works and why that is, I'll explain below:

All the OSTs are being played with "Mono". Although there are only three difficulties available, feel free to add Ironmode.

The following rules apply for most of the Touhou games, namely:
      Display Spoiler
      - Highly Responsive to Prayers
      - The Story of Eastern Wonderland
      - Lotus Land Story
      - Mystic Square
      - The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
      - Perfect Cherry Blossom
      - Imperishable Night
      - Mountain of Faith
      - Subterranean Animism
      - Undefined Fantastic Object
      - Fairy Wars
      - Ten Desires

You start off with three lives in total (like most of the default settings). One life is defined by getting hit by a grey block, meaning if you hit a grey block one life is lost which in turn means if you hit three grey blocks you lose the game. If being hit by a gray block, you're "invulnerable" until the grey block vanishes. Extra lives can be obtained by beating the top score of the song in your game mode (Mono) and difficulty. The maximum cap of lives you may have is five, meaning that if you have three lives left and beat two top scores you have five lives but can't obtain any more lives by beating more top scores.
If you fail during the playthrough you have to start over.
When playing Boss themes however, you have to reach the Gold Medal to proceed. Otherwise you have to start over.
Using the mouse buttons (this only applies to Mono and Mono Pro) counts as spell cards. You start off with four spell cards but no extra spell cards may be obtained during the playthrough.
The Main Menu theme as well as the Ending theme and the Credits theme as well as the Player's Score theme can be played freely, meaning you are granted infinite lives and spell cards since you never really play stages in Touhou containing these titles. The Extra Stage theme and the Extra Stage Boss theme however are to be played with one life only. If you fail the Extra Stage or the Extra Stage Boss you may restart at the Extra Stage theme.
It's a bit hard but fun.

The following rules apply to only two games in the series, namely:
      Display Spoiler
      - Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream
      - Phantasmagoria of Flower View

Here the life rule is different. You start off every song with three lives. If you hit three grey blocks you're out. Simple. Since this is very easy, the invulnerability doesn't count here, so if you hit three grey blocks in a row you're out this time. Spell cards may be obtained by scoring eleven blocks at the same time (also known as "match 11"). You start off with 0 spell cards. If you fail during the playthrough you have to start over.
The Main Menu theme as well as the Ending theme and the Credits theme as well as the Player's Score theme can be played freely, meaning you are granted infinite lives and spell cards since you never really play stages in Touhou containing these titles.
To increase difficulty (since this is very very easy) you may activate Ironmode and/or play on the Elite difficulty.

The following rules apply to two games of the series, namely:
      Display Spoiler
      - Shoot the Bullet
      - Double Spoiler

Again, the life rule is different here. Here you only have one life per song you play. I guess this is the hardest way to play. If you hit just one grey block you're out. But compared to the other games, you may restart the song you play and not the whole playthrough like you do with most of the games since these Touhou games are played differently. Also you don't have to play every song in the correct order, just choose which one you want.
      There are no spellcards.

The following rules apply only to the fighting games of the series, namely:
      Display Spoiler
      - Immaterial and Missing Power
      - Scarlet Weather Rhapsody
      - Hisoutensoku
      - Hopeless Masquerade

These life rules may be the easiest. You may hit an infinite amount of grey blocks but as soon as you overfill you're out. I recommend Ironmode for this since it's very easy overlooked. You start off with five spell cards and there are no other spell cards to obtain. If you overfill on one title you have to start over even if you don't have to play the titles in the correct order.
Elite mode recommended since this may be the easiest mode.

Have fun playing like this, I like it.
