There is only one thing you should do to improve this. LOVE THE GAMES YOU ARE PLAYING. If you are raring to record it then you will feel it in your gut. If it doesn't feel right at the time then don't. The point of recording games and commentating is to share your passion and love for games with your audience.

While what you say is semi-true, not everyone who has a passion for something portrays it in their voice. I love video games and a few other things, but my voice is my voice. I don't get super excited and squeal and stuff. It's not that I don't get excited, but it just doesn't come out that way through my speaking. And I know a lot of people are like that. If you judge everything based on how they say it, you'll get misunderstandings. I'm sure if you watched one of my videos you'd think I was bored as hell playing these games when I'm really having a blast XD. Especially my facial expressions ;-;... one day....

I totally know what you are saying but I mean that commentating is kind of like if you were commentating a game of football, NFL or any kind of sport...except tennis. The commentators ring with a passion that gets the viewers amped up. Same with television hosts. You are guiding your viewers through the show and keeping them interested by providing them exciting comments. If the people on screen don't sound like they are having fun then the viewers won't have fun. Sure everyone isn't going to squeal and stuff but you still need to engage your audience in a way that makes it feel like they are right there with you in that moment. :)

    *UPDATE*

A good example is my own channel. When I was doing my God of War 2 playthrough I started out kind of laid back, in a way I tried to be a little serious while still being interested in the game. Then I watched some other Youtubers and they were just so in sync with the game. You could hear their enthusiasm singing through the speakers. I then realised I had to up my game. By the end of my Heavenly Sword Playthrough and into my Little Big Planet Karting playthrough my enthusiasm sky rocketed and I was speaking in a way that seemed incredibly happy to be playing the game I was playing. It takes a lot of practice and a lot of it came from just casually playing games inbetween recording and speaking to myself off mic. It is all down to improvising and thinking of clever comments or something that might make someone laugh, or smirk. Even if it fails to connect at least the energy from speaking is there. ;)

  • I had this problem donkey's ago, often it wont matter should you use a face-cam for scary games but for games that don't need reactions just record the gameplay and then commentate over it later on :) it's what I do so then you can concentrate properly on playing AND on having a good commentary!

PS: Sorry if anyone's already suggested this - I'm in a rush and didn't read the entire thread

  • Think of it as this: You are a comedian on stage and you have to keep your audience entertained with something, in this case your voice. Well I dunno my voice is a little high pitch (maybe alot) but I find my self having quite an interesting voice lol.

Yeah it makes sense, like in your update I think I'm making progress but still have a loOoOoOooOooOoOng way to go. I've been anti-social and talking boringly for so many years now its got a ways to go. But I still feel like its progressing, if ever so slightly. Glad he made this topic, maybe I can get a little out of it :)
