  • YouTube partnership for gamers

I was recently thinking about starting a cooperative YouTube channel with a friend of mine. Obviously if we were any good at it and gained views & subscriptions, we would eventually want to get approved for YouTube partnership and earn some money with it to maintain and upgrade the equipment etc.

From what I've heard, it used to be quite hard to get approved for partnership, especially if you were posting gaming videos as it displays footage of copyrighted material, nowadays it's supposedly extremely easy to get partnership, however your videos will not get approved for monetization. I was researching this topic a bit and I'm getting very mixed results, so I just wanted someone who isn't a huge success, but has been approved for partnership and is monetizing their videos to explain this to me.

According to the new YouTube's policy you are not legally allowed to monetize gaming videos unless they are instructional (e.g. walkthroughs) and contain a minimal amount of the actual game footage. I heard that to be able to post raw game commentaries / let's plays you must now join a gaming network, such as Machinima. Since the gaming network has to cover all the costs, and turn some kind of profit for themselves, you get much lower revenue from your videos than using the official YouTube partnership program.

So to summarise, is this true? Do you really have to become a part of a gaming network which will take a huge cut of your earnings? Is there a way to become an official YouTube partner posting sketches / let's plays and general cooperative gameplay which technically wouldn't be considered "instructional / educational".

I appologize for the extremely long topic.
  • When i read the thread i clearly see why you want to do this. Money money money.
If you actually could think a bit more, having that mindset wont lead you anywhere.
Focus on entertainment and gaming at the same time.

And no, partnership is easy to get and its not a "massive" cut.
I am not a huge success and i am actually partnered. The money is nothing for me anyways, i wanted the partnership features.
    They are worth way more.

I am uploading LP's and claiming them. Claiming and monetizing are 2 different things.
Dont even bother monetizing anything, wait for a partnership.

Machinima and Youtube themselves are hard to get it
Dont even try with Fullscreen, they are really picky.
Socialblade is a good one actually, and TGN haves a bad support system.
    Dont even talk about Yeousch.

And dont worry about the length, you deserve a good answer.

Yeah TGNs mods are FAR too ban happy in their chat box and are really bad at supporting their partners... if you ever got with TGN you're best off asking other TGN partners for help with something but if money is all you want partnership for then you wont get far at ALL buddy. People will hate you for it, even!

The primary reason isn't actually money, but yes gaining some kind of profit from it wouldn't hurt, at least to cover the costs of software used etc., if we gained any additional profit it could also used to create giveaways and other such treats for the audience. The extra features do come in handy as well, adds quite a bit of extra customization so you can make the channel stand out and be unique.

Could you explain further about "claiming" your videos? How does it work? Also, I know that to monetize you must have partnership, which I don't expect to get right away, but it would be nice to eventually get it.
  • You don't need to be partnered to monetize your videos. You just need to sign up for it (it's somewhere in your profile options). I've done it to unlock the custom thumbnail option, but I don't monetize my vids in fact.
Have you seen a tea party taken to a whole
new level? Well my tea party features the usual stuff (tea, cake,
pastries...) mixed with video games, monsters, ghosts, blood and lots of
    screams and giggles.

Don't be shy and join the party, there's room for everyone! Here's the path to
    Rose Reaper's Geek Tea Party.
  • Thumbnails:
30 days with good standing afaik.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you claim a video, there is 3 types.
    Audio-Visual (AV)
    Audio Only (AO)
    Visual Only (VO)

If you created everything yourself, music, audio and video you can claim AudioVisual.
If you only created the audio or only the video, you choose the right claim.

If you used someone elses work, you should have asked allowance and credited them for helping you.

If someone else uploads the video on youtube and its an AV you can take it down.
On some vids people uploaded like pewdies vids, its says "This video is taken down by its owner"
Not sure if its the same with AO and VO thou.
  • Partnering through youtube themselves is currently impossible with their current ToS , however you can partner with networks (RPM etc.) which are already partnered with youtube and blablblablablablablabla and they can enable all the features for you (however they get a cut from everything you earn)

For instance, if I have used a song by an indie artist and have his permission & personal intro, some gameplay footage with commentary (recorded by me) and a personal outro. Does this count as an AV (since I have the permission from the artist and the video footage is technically made by me) or can I only claim it for the audio (AO), since I don't own copyright to the game?

How long did it take for you to be approved and gain the extra features (custom banner, thumbnail, subscription button, etc) ?
Sorry, but I don't quite understand how you have enabled monetisation (to gain these extra features) but DON'T monetize them at the same time?

It counts as AV because you have commentary.
Sidenote: I AV all my claimed videos.

Alright, thanks a bunch for the clarification. I'll check out some of the networks you suggested.
SocialBlade doesn't look serious just by looking at their homepage, but I guess you can't judge a book by its cover.
  • Banner, Custom Name Tag -> Custom partnership branding
Thumbnail as i stated above, 30 days in good standing. No strikes or anything.
You can enable monetization for your account, but you dont have to monetize any videos.

Socialblade takes 40% i think and have a great support system.
They get answered in max 24h. SB provide great stats aswell.
The network thats linked through Socialblade is RPM/Maker Studios.

Also, you need a lot of subscribers to make any kind of money. You'd be better off with a lemonade stand outside your house until you hit a couple of thousand subs.

You can have loads of subs , but if they aren't active then you can forget it. Its all about the views.
True but you won't be getting any views with no subs. They come hand in hand especially for new channels.

Dude you haven't even started making videos yet. How do you know anyone will want to watch them?

Let's Plays aren't as straight forward as they seem. You need a likeable personality, a lot of patience, editing skills and a good microphone as a minimum.
Forget about the partnership until you've got your foot in the door as least.

I just wanted some clarification before starting anything. After watching some videos about this matter (in which the people apparently didn't have a clue what they were talking about, or had their facts completely wrong), it confused me even more, some of them even made it seem as if it's illegal to create videos with gameplay footage unless they are classed as "educational", while clearly a huge amount of people do it.
