    • Self-Promotion Using Someone Else's Videos... Really?

      Hey, guys, most of you own channels, so thought the subject might interest you. Came across a Dubstep music channel that had recently uploaded a number of videos about Amanda Todd... they were lovely videos. They just didn't belong to the channel owner. They were videos taken from OTHER popular channels, such as MrRepzion, with only a brief mention as to the original creators in the video description. One of the videos, a vlog response from a 300k sub channel, couldn't even see any mention to the name of the original contributer, just a link to the original video explaining this was the 'Original Amanda Todd Video.'

      It should be noted that the channel owner took down the video I was using as my primary example, because the actual owner of the video, MrRepzion, insisted on it; I can't really blame him, considering this guy was basically putting Repzion's social commentary vlog on his dubstep music channel, and inviting eeeeveryone to like his Dubstep channel Facebook page. =P More than a few of the people commenting at first actually thought this guy was the original creator of the vlog. Naturally ending up with thousands and thousands of views as a result, which strikes me as a slimy tactic. Still, I'm curious as to the reactions of others; if someone snagged one of your videos, without asking mind you, uploaded it to their account, and mentioned your name in the credits, would that make it all right?

    • While I think it's cool as long as you ask for permission (and get it), just straight up filching and uploading it pretty gross. I mean, they might as well say, "Hi! I have no talents whatsoever of my own but I want empty accolades anyway!" And you know, what's the point? It's not like anyone is praising their work anyway? What makes it worst is the clear exploitation of that poor girl too. The Amanda Todd stuff is viral at the moment and the person is clearly abusing it for attention. Ick.
    • I second Kneesocks. It's exactly the same on deviantART, where a lot of people open an account and submit other artists' stuff, just because the pics are cool. It makes me sick.
      Have you seen a tea party taken to a whole
      new level? Well my tea party features the usual stuff (tea, cake,
      pastries...) mixed with video games, monsters, ghosts, blood and lots of
      screams and giggles.

      Don't be shy and join the party, there's room for everyone! Here's the path to
      Rose Reaper's Geek Tea Party.
    • I have a completely different opinion, I believe you should be allowed to use a portion of someone's content (because obviously if they're famous they wont have chance to reply) as long as you put plenty of links and make it CLEAR that it's from another person's video and if they ask you to remove it, you should do so (before youtube admins do it for you). Whereas people that upload videos talking about death and tragedy (which I doubt any of these people actually care about because they don't sound sad in the slightest during these videos) just for the sole purpose of views and money are the scum of the internet... I rank trolls more highly than them

      I do see unauthorized content use in some cases, usually in Video Replies, reviews, etc, situations where you're taking it 'From The Horse's Mouth.' This just felt different because it was basically taking a video, whole, not modifying it in any way beyond adding advertisments for his own music page, and presenting it for views... as I said in my vid, if you absolutely wanted to show your fans a video from another channel, you can just add it to your playlist, put it on your front page. You don't have to upload it at all.

      Ohhh, he's kinda guilty of that last part too, in my opinion anyway. Case in point, one of the vids he uploaded was of Amanda Todd, an upload I guess she made prior to her death when she was singing a song; fair enough that he didn't nab permission, though I'm standing by the fact that the upload is an attention grab. The last straw is he had the same annotation box, directly ON the video itself, that he did for Repzion's vid;

      To quote, 'For your support, would you please go like my Facebook <3 You won't regret it and it'll help support Amanda Todd.' Immediately following that is the link to hiiiis Facebook page. Again, this was an annotation box directly on the vid. Checked his page, didn't see any mention to Amanda Todd. Or bullying. Just about his music; hell, his last post on it was 'keep those likes coming ;) '

    • I feel physically ill reading that :S

      If you are going to use whatever's trending to get views then I don't see anything wrong with that because I've done it in the past but when the thing that's trending is a tragedy or something along those lines, that just makes me sick. What I mean is for example I'm thinking of doing some sort of video for Halloween to boost my viewers a little simply because that might be trending but no way would I pretend to care about a girl that I didn't even know existed until it hit the news that she'd killed herself. Some people just want to see the world burn if it earns them views or money -.-

      Aye, I mean, my entire channel's PURPOSE is to talk about this kind of stuff, but I didn't make an Amanda Todd video until the wrinkle came up wherein Anonymous revealed the possible identity of her original tormentor. I did rant a little, yes, but I have a history with bullies, so this was admittedly more about my issues than anything else. x.X I dunno, on the one hand I don't want to get my channel in trouble by starting an outright war- making waves, etc- on the other hand, if this guy does end up profiting from these tactics, I might just sob into my cereal.

      Wow, "to help Amanda Todd", huh? I just threw up in my mouth a little at this guy's utter lack of respect for this girl and for his viewers.

      Oh yeah. And it's clever, because the smokescreen is Amanda Todd herself; I saw one person point out, in one of the videos, that this guy didn't own the video, that it was by another channel. She promptly got flamed by other people because she was 'a dumb bitch who didn't respect Amanda' etc etc etc. Usual stupidity, in other words, but it makes it the perfect con, because anyone who makes noise about his tactics on his channel is going to get verbally smacked by a group of people who would actually AGREE with them normally if Amanda Todd's videos weren't the subject at hand. =P Blargh.
