For your hat question, you can type in Google Images "hat filetype:png" or "hat filetype:gif", there are probably some images with transparent background that you can use for your avatars. Have you already tried that ?

You're welcome. It's an option available in "advanced search" but I didn't know where the hell Google hid the link so I was using this written option. Before it was below the search input field but I noticed that it was moved to the top-right menu with a cogwheel on it just a few moments ago. This menu only appears if you are on your search results page, there's nothing at the Google Images main page... -
