I think you should try something i tried in some times and worked. The first times try not to spend much time with him (don't speak much). Then try to avoid hanging out with him very often. And after that try to avoid him completly. Follow those steps but really slow and make it so that he doesn't think that you really try to avoid him. Hope i helped
