There is a difference between big YouTube channels like PewDiePie, Smosh etc and small private channels. For big channels YouTube is a business, they are looking to grow profits. Small channels are just a hobby. However I haven't heard anything about it being discontinued so I'm going to back @Mystery here and say that it will be back in stock soonish.

I'll throw in the probably most effective method (apart from viral stuff and so on), even if it's likely not what you're looking for: Just like with real products that have to pay for their ads to run on TV, you can also pay Google to "rent" some of their ad spaces to boost your channel a bit. You'd use Google AdWords for that, you have to pay real money though. I get 100$ coupons for that service every now and then asking me to sign up to receive them, so maybe keep a look out for that.

The reasoning is a different one, he explained it in one of his earlier videos... I honestly forgot which one though. Pretty sure someone also wrote it down somewhere. The way Google Translate works is that it gets translations by comparing literature and so on between languages. In this case it just picked up the PewDiePie is the nickname for Felix Kjellberg. It does NOT mean that it is an actual translation. PewDiePie is no actual word.
