For me, a crappy plot can ruin the atmosphere. You get a lot of cliches and based sterotypical characters in both mainstream and indie games, which is a shame. It even happened in Resident Evil 4/5 (In terms of gameplay,it was completely magnificent but hollywood movie cliche crap in terms of plot).
