I just stumbled upon this while I was surfing the web, this game is like a tribute to those classic 8-Bit Action games like Contra and bionic commando.

I played the test version that they hosted on their site, and despite the early draft, bugs and things that might need improvement, it looks promising. And yes this game has BARRELS that you can shoot and they explode. If you ask me, this game was aiming for us, the bro army.
