Display Spoiler
This is actually a port/remake of the arcade version, But I think we'll just start here anyway.
The game follows Rad Spencer, A commando who is sent in to stop the enemies plans and rescue an MIA soldier by the name of Super Joe. The object of the game is to platform and shoot your way to a radio station to contact your commander/allies during your various missions. Yes, This is necessary as they often open up the way for you to progress. And then you make your way to the end of the level to fight either a boss battle or an endless barrage of grunts trying to protect a super computer that you have to blow up.
The game makes use of a map as a means of selecting a level, In which there are enemies also crossing between levels. Should a player encounter said enemies, You must then play a top-down Ikari Warrior view mode to advance passed them. Some levels will not be accessible outright, Forcing you to go to a different level in order to find that obligatory item/weapon needed to advance from whatever point you are unable to pass.
This game is noted for being a platformer that doesn't allow you to jump. Instead, The player must use a grappling hook attached to the player's arm to swing their way across whatever sort of pitfall or spike trap or whatever may otherwise be in your way.
The Gameboy version is basically the same as this game, Only changing the setting to be futuristic.

Bionic Commando: Elite Forces [Gameboy Color]
This version borrows the platforming elements from it's NES predecessor and adds some new features of it's own. Most notably, The option to choose your player character (Either a nameless male character or a nameless female one...yay), The ability to climb down from platforms, & Sniper Rifle segments.
Again, The player is called to stop the badguys and rescue the resident damsel in distress, Super Joe. ...Geez, How'd this guy get the lead role of the Arcade game? lol

Bionic Commando: ReArmed [PS3, X-BOX 360, PC]
This is a remake of the NES game, Down to the platforming and story. Again, Rad Spe-- oh, Sorry, Nathan Spencer is called to stop the badguys from succeeding in their plans and rescue Super Joe. Some elements have been updated, The bosses have been given a boost to change up the gameplay from the NES version, Local Multiplayer has been added to the campaign mode, A challenge mode has been added to further extend playtime, And even the final moments of the game, Which have been dubbed as one of the most legendary of moments in any game ever, Has been given the HD treatment to further emphasize the awesome.
Bionic Commando (2009) [PS3, X-BOX 360, PC]
This is the sequel of ReArmed. Taking the elements of ReArmed and adding 3-D gameplay to it. Taking place 10 years after the events of ReArmed, Nathan Spencer is arrested and set for execution when a plot device appears and gives Nathan the chance to redeem himself and his fellow Bionics... Anyway, The player can now use Spencer's arm to lift up rocks, cars, and BARRELS to throw at enemies. The player can also use Spencer's boots to kick the objects at them, as well as performing the "Death From Above" maneuver, stomping the ground from a great height to cause a shockwave.
Surprisingly, This is the first game since the arcade game in which Super Joe isn't in need of rescuing. He even drops the Super title and opts for plain and boring "Joe Gibson"... Which is apparently his real name.

Bionic Commando: ReArmed 2 [PS3, X-BOX 360]
The sequel to ReArmed 1 in every way down to the 2-d element of gameplay, But also a prequel to Bionic Commando 09. This entry introduces a feature that was never present until this and BC09, Jumping. It also features the "Death From Above" stomp maneuver from BC09. Local Multiplayer returns in this installment as well as the challenge mode. The map has been removed from this installation, As well as the Ikari Warrior mode of advancing passed enemies on the trail.
Formerly Super Joe Gibson appears again as your commanding officer for the plot of this game's story.
