Torchlight

    • Well, I haven't seen these ones being suggested, but I saw the Diablo games being suggested, including Diablo III. In my honest opinion, Diablo III is an overexpensive disappointment that can't hold a candle to Diablo II, so I'm gonna make what I think is a better suggestion.

Torchlight is an action RPG developed by Runic Games, a studio formed by Max Schaefer and Eric Schaefer, two of the people behind the first two Diablo games, together with Travis Baldree, designer of FATE, and a considerable part of the employees of the late Blizzard North, which also worked on the first two Diablo games. The music has been composed by Matt Uelmen, the guy who gave us the music of the first two Diablo games, including that incredibly awesome piece that plays when you are in Tristram.

With a team like this, you guys know what to expect, right? Exactly, this game plays a lot like Diablo and Diablo II: Go down a dungeon, kill monsters, take their loot, make yourself stronger with it and the experience levels you gather. But the gameplay is distilled to the point of being less frustrating: You have a pet, like in FATE, which can carry stuff for you and also go back to town to sell the vendor trash. The inventory is slot based instead of grid base, meaning you no longer have to engage in tedious inventory management puzzles. There are socketed items and gems, like in Diablo II, but this time, if you find better gems or want to recycle the ones you have socketed, you can remove the gems by breaking the item, or free up the sockets by breaking the gems (A system that was developed way before Diablo III showed it, and that unlike Diablo III it actually has some risk and opportunity costs, which in my opinion makes it less pointless and more fun). If you find something you think would fit better on another class, you can leave it on a shared stash that can be accessed by other characters you play, meaning that the awesome melee weapon you have found but you can't equip because you're not focused on melee is no longer vendor trash. Oh, and gold is automatically picked up as you walk near it instead of having to be clicked (Another feature that was developed before Diablo III even mentioned it).

The only flaws I can pinpoint are the limited amount of classes and the fact that the game is exclusively single player. However, a direct sequel is gonna come out on a few months that is gonna add completely new classes as well as cooperative and player versus player gameplay, and the team behind these games is planning on developing an MMO that expands on these features and the game's setting, so if you like this game but thirst for multiplayer, your thirst will be quenched soon.

Synopsis of the first game: In the world where the game takes place, Ember is a mysterious ore which has the power to imbue people and items with magical power. The game takes place in Torchlight, a mining town built above a rich vein of Ember. Adventurers are drawn to this place by their lust for the magical substance and the power it promises. However, not all is right in Torchlight. In the mines beneath the town, an evil influence lurks and endangers those who would want to use Ember for a good cause.

Torchlight can be purchased here or here. Torchlight II can be pre-ordered here. As a bonus, the pre-order comes with a free copy of Torchlight for you to keep or gift to someone else. Torchlight can be played on both PC and Mac, and I suspect that sometime after release, Torchlight II will also have Mac compatibility. As a final point, I should add that the game has mod support via the user-friendly editing application, TorchED, which can be downloaded from Steam's Tools list.
