  • Not monetized gameplay footage. Is it ok to upload it to youtube?

    Hi everyone,

I've been thinking about starting a youtube chanel for quite some time now and i have a question. Its about copyright, i've searched all over the internet but i couldn't find the answer.

My question is, Can you upload any gamplay footage (with commentry of course) as long as it isn't monetized? Without having to ask permission to the copyright holders. What i'm trying to say is: Would this be seen as fair use?

I know that when you have a small youtube chanel this might not get noticed, but i want to do things right and i sure as hell don't wanna have any copyright strikes.

I know that you can't monetize copyrighted material without the owners permission (That's what youtube networks are for), But what about just uploading it? I also know that there are certain games such as minecraft that have already stated that as long as you add commentry to your gameplay you can monetize it without asking them.

Of course that i would like to get partnered with a network someday to be able to monetize my videos, but networks have requirements to join them, like for instance having 1000 sub, How could i possibly get 1000 subs without being able to upload something? I mean, How would you get started then? That's the reason that i think it might be possible, because even the big youtubers like pewdiepie started without being partnered.

Anyways, that's my question thanks for your time :)
  • Yes, I've heard that music is a much complicated matter. On the other hand, i've seen people who uploaded gameplay footage of a game released over 10 years ago and still get copyright claims. However, these people monetized such videos, and maybe that was the problem.

    Thanks for your anser :)
