You enter the server name, and it connects to the server and allows communication with everyone on the server. So, like, if 20 people join the PewDiePie server [projectpew.net], you can talk with all 20 of them. There probably are a lot of servers for different kinds of events and such.

You gather everyone you need/want, initiate a call, minimize the software and then open the game you want. I think it works like that.
