When it comes to the RE movies, they didn't really go off the games that much. They just threw the characters in and called it Resident Evil. Why has no one mentioned Hello Kitty: Roller Rescue??? That game was crazy difficult...couldn't even get past the title screen without dying.

I would definitely wait until the consumer one comes out. I was reading a lot about the process that the developers are going through to fix bugs and fine tune everything. They even said that it would be worth the wait. I know that they are aiming for a lower price on the consumer version, and possibly making it free by adding it to console bundles. Not sure which one they will end up doing. But whatever they do, it will be better than paying $300 for something that's not completely finished.

We know that gameplay from the story could help out as a walkthrough. Open world gameplay (from games like GTA or Saints Row) could be more entertaining since you can do anything you want, and possibly make up your own story.
