Quote from Cue: “Quote from Shikieiki Yamaxanadu: “Go with Unreal, Unity is unoptimized and a resource hogger.” Citation needed. UDK is a horrible engine to work with, I've given it a poke before and it was not a pleasant experience at all. I know 4 university course's worth of students using it and they hate using it. The editor is clunky and slow and eats away at your resources like nobody's business. Unity on the other hand I recently started working with and absolutely love it. While UDK is …

I tried it out and it works pretty nicely. I'll post some of my thoughts about it. This will probably come across as unnecessarily harsh, but it's not because I think the overall product is bad; I actually think it's coming along quite nicely, but I figure it's better to share all the things I thought could be improved. The map itself generally looks very attractive (although I laughed at "Maps/CliffsOfShitMainMap/map.map"). The only things I wasn't as enthused about were the fact that some of t…

I like almost all of the old Sonic games, including a lot of the 8-bit ones (released for Sega Master System and Game Gear). The 8 bit versions of Sonic 1 and 2 are distinct from the Sega Genesis versions and very nice games in their own right, although Sonic 2 seems like it might have been a bit rushed, as Tails appears in all of the level title screens but is never actually a playable character; in fact he gets kidnapped in the intro sequence and then at the end he just dies (well, not really.…

PostQuote from Gonzo Mason: “Quote from cows: “I think that's sort of like saying it's a shame that you can make really nice sculptures out of stone, but sometimes people throw stones at each other instead.” That wouldn't be getting anything done though...?” Exactly. Tools are only as good as the people using them. Quote: “Quote from cows: “I have to say that the actual Sonic R looks very beautiful compared to this game.” This actually looks sort of better than the real Sonic R. It's got a perfect 3…

No problem. I don't always play games, but when I do, I play... well, mostly weird, old, or obscure ones.

PostQuote from Gonzo Mason: “It's a shame that you can make some really good games in Unity, yet people make games with it on the same graphics level as Duck Tales.” I think that's sort of like saying it's a shame that you can make really nice sculptures out of stone, but sometimes people throw stones at each other instead. Quote from luzix: “graphics compared to a fucking PSone or a Sega fucking Saturn” I have to say that the actual Sonic R looks very beautiful compared to this game.

PostQuote from amusei: “Wrong section. This shoul be in the Websites forum. But nice site I like it :)” You may be right, but I noticed that the Websites forum is under the "User Creations" heading and I didn't want people to get the impression that I had any affiliation with this site beyond the fact that I like it. If this is in the wrong section I hope a moderator can move it for me.

PostI thought I'd share a pretty neat blog that I know of. It's updated sporadically but the stuff there is almost always pretty interesting. One thing that caught my attention was this little flash game. The game is not particularly profound, and at first it looked like the developer only made that sort of smallish flash adventure game, but eventually I clicked on the RPG Maker tab and was amazed to realize that this was also the original developer of Ao Oni. Finally, you shouldn't copy stuff from …

Quote from Xirena: “You need permission if its a widly known person, as such Pewdiepie is, there for if you do it then ninechances out of ten they can come back and sue you BUT i do suppose if he does have a problem with it he would get hold of me and hopefully he wouldn't. It's nothing negative at all in the end.” Actually whether the quote is from a "widely known person" really has no bearing on this issue whatsoever; indeed, in some (tangentially related, at best) situations, being a public f…

Quote from Zara: “The new blender doesn't support the .fbx export anymore right?” I'm using version 2.67b (the latest official binary) and it does. If "Autodesk FBX" doesn't show up in your export menu it's possible that you have the exporter disabled from the "addons" menu.

PostQuote from Kemerd: “Thanks for feedback. Still trying to get my models to work though.” I can't promise I'll be able to help but I'm fairly familiar with the Unreal Engine. What problem are you having with your models? Are they static or skeletal meshes?

Quote from RiskRim: “Well they thought slender man had alot of potentiol, that why the made Slanderman The Arrival. ” I'm not sure that counts as potential so much as proven brand recognition. I think Slender: The Eight Pages capitalized on the popularity of Slender Man at least as much as the actual quality of the game itself, and Slender: The Arrival in turn capitalized on the popularity of Slender: The Eight Pages.

Quote from Gonzo Mason: “Quote from Beeckusu: “Personally for me horror games that have a non-scary threat really rustles my jimmies. I'M LOOKING AT YOU, SLENDERMAN. A lot of a horror game is also the sounds and music that goes with it too. If you've ever played Amnesia without sounds, you'll know what I'm talking about (even if the grunt makes me cry at night).” Read the god damn OP before you post, PLEASE.” Well, it's not that far off from what I was looking for. Slender Man's lack of scarines…

Quote from RiskRim: “Oh comon, thats all the horror games all about, that you get scared by low grapic thing and you are like ahh damn im so stupid for getting scared from this :D” Right, but I think the games that do this fairly effectively (I'm thinking of things like Slender: The Eight Pages and some of those Half-Life 1 based games) are at least consistently not-that-great, so seeing something that doesn't look very real doesn't completely break the immersion. Seeing something that''s notice…

I was thinking about that Pizza Delivery game which, while by no means a masterpiece, seemed to have more potential than it actually capitalized on ("I feel a strange presence behind me..." was actually a pretty cool moment). As such, my sense is that, while a scary game can be sustained by even incredibly terrible graphics, inconsistency in graphical quality is pretty fatal. That is, the game could have been frightening even though the pizza looked like this: 2prwfmh.png But not after the Pizza…
