You've mentioned you use Subtitle Workshop, so I'd suggest you make a new file for subs, import the desired video and when done with editing save as .srt. (In the different types of Sub extensions, you pick the one called SubRip) Save it on your desktop and then, manually, change the extension from .srt to .sbv. Youtube works just fine with this.
