Ok, so hear me out. Pewds has discovered that all of his friends have been brain washed by a mysterious enemy, and he must traverse levels themed on each friend. The boss of each level are people like Cry, Ken, Mark, Jack, Marzia and after freeing each one from control of the mysterious antagonist, he gains a different power and they work similarly to how they acted as a boss.
