If we're talking about ancient/medieval warfare, I'd combine a spear and a knife with a buckler. The knife is meant to parry the enemy when comes in too close, while the spear is used to keep him at bay. The buckler is there for obvious reasons. It's a very reasonable and versatile combination.
By the way, you can easily fire a shotgun if your stance is correct.
