I like your idea playing small crappy games and playing them for longer than I could keep my sanity doing it. xD

VR has some potential - there is a new game on Steam called Passing Pineview Forest. You may want to play that with the Rift. :3

Productivity and scenery
I’m interested in virtual reality for productivity and scenery.
Remember the virtual-reality scene in Heavy Rain?
?t=1m40s
“Step one: change the office”
E.g.
Traders can have 12 or more monitors for prices, news, charts, analytics, financial data, alerts, messages, etc..
Bloomberg LP (makes financial software) built a virtual prototype of their data terminal for the Oculus Rift.
Here is the image of their prototype with 20 virtual screens: Z9atPdh.png
It’s much cheaper than buying 20 physical monitors.
Eye-tracking is going to come to the Samsung VR, and there are some eye-tracking development kits for the Rift.
I think eye tracking helps with auto calibration, so that may lessen the chances of problems like motion sickness.
Looking at a screen, and pressing a Rift eye-tracking “select-what-am-looking-at” keyboard button would probably be better than trying to move a mouse-controlled cursor across 20 virtual screens.
I think the main problem with the desktop simulators that are made so far is that the resolution is too low to see the text well.
Resolution needs to improve anyway because low resolution is a contributor to headaches.
Input
In one of Oculus Rift’s presentations, they mentioned that virtual-reality input is something that they need to solve.
There was Yogscast Martyn’s Leap Motion video.
At the 10 minute mark, you could hear Martyn mentioning that he had to stop because of the pain in his arms.
Competitive gaming
I’m not sure where virtual-reality will come into play for gaming.
If you look at the most popular games on Twitch, you have games like League of Legends and Minecraft.
For competitive gaming, I don’t see how it’s going to work.
Games like Half-Life 2 are already a huge problem in the Rift.
Oculus Rift already works with Minecraft, but I don’t think Youtubers are switching to it.
It doesn’t add much.
People are talking about treadmills, and holding up guns and swords.
There is a demo where you can use your hands to pick up a chess piece.
Is that any different than just moving a virtual chess piece with a tap of a button?
Would you be willing to play Bloodborne by actually lifting a physical object?
Future
I can’t imagine the killer app game that will make people want to buy a headmounted display for.
It will continue to be good for showing off YouTube videos, but the gaming sessions are probably still going to be short.
Contrary to what the virtual-reality enthusiasts want, I’m still interested in 2-D screens in virtual reality.
E.g. watching a movie in a virtual theater.
Virtual objects outside of the 2-D screen could provide extra information to augment the experience.
I am in the minority, but it would be much easier for developers to implement, and it could be more practical.
One great thing that the Rift has done is bring non-gamers into the virtual space.
Google just invested 500 million in Magic Leap, and other big players have jumped in.
They have apparently found a way to render 3-D objects in the real world that you can focus on, as opposed to the flatscreen that the Rift provides.
It looks like it’s going to be a headmounted display for augmented reality.
I wonder which approach consumers will accept first
