I cant really help with the dealing with the separation, but in regards to calling someone else 'mum' or 'dad', you should never be expected too, my dad left before i was born and my step dad has been around since i was a toddler, but I've never called him anything but his name, as i could never get used to the idea of calling him dad.

The difference ive found when making friends irl and online is that people online are less quick to form an opinion on you and will attempt to get to know you to some extent. Diablos in Final Fantasy 8 I remember being a pain in the ass. First time i played it through I fluked my way through it first time, every subsequent playthrough I could never manage it again, I don't know why. And a large amount of Diablo 3 Bosses on Inferno.
